The Vicious Cycle of Seeking Comfort Over Health
My wellness journey began in late 2013 when I landed what felt like the job of my dreams: working at the World Cup in Brazil! It was an exciting and fulfilling experience, involving extensive travel and managing countless responsibilities. However, the high pressure and intense workload began to take a toll on my well-being. Within a year, I had gained 10kg (22lbs) and found myself grappling with overwhelming anxiety.
To cope, I turned to anti-anxiety medication under medical supervision. While it was meant to help, the medication affected my central nervous system in ways I didn’t anticipate. One of the side effects was an intense craving for sugar, and I found myself consuming nearly a full can of sweetened condensed milk every day. What was intended as a cure for anxiety seemed to create a new problem entirely—trading one imbalance for another. Sometimes, the pursuit of healing can unexpectedly open the door to different challenges.
Caught in this cycle of high-pressure demands, quick fixes, and fleeting comfort, I began to feel the deeper toll on my physical and mental health. The sugar provided a temporary escape, but it left me stuck in patterns that only deepened the imbalances I was trying to escape.
By the end of 2014, as the World Cup project came to a close, I couldn’t ignore the state of my health any longer. My body and mind were clearly crying out for change, and I knew I couldn’t keep masking the symptoms without addressing the root cause. That’s when I decided to take a leap and invest in myself by booking a 5-day Wellness Spa Retreat. What I initially saw as a short getaway unexpectedly became the catalyst for a profound detoxification journey—one that reshaped my relationship with food, health, and self-care.

At this retreat, I finally recognized that my old coping mechanisms—devouring sugar and relying on medication—were nothing more than surface-level solutions. They masked the deeper imbalances I had internalized for years, without ever addressing the root causes of my struggles.

This journey was a revelation, peeling back the layers of rigid diet dogmas and reconnecting with what my being truly needed to find authentic balance.
